Once I encountered an apple computer with an 9.2.2 operating system that booted just as you expect it, but then hang for ages just at the end of the boot process. The same problem appeared recently in the classic environment with OS X Panther (10.3.0).
The problem could be identified in the attempt of the operating system to mount network volumes that are referenced in the folder Systemfolder/Server that aren't available anymore. Go to this folder and delete the volumes that are not available and your computer will startup as fast as you expect it. If you still experience problems go to Systemfolder/Apple-Menu/Used Server and delete aswell the unavailable server volumes.
